Super League, Maybe

They tried during the last school year to create a new league but were unsuccessful. A second effort this school year to combine the schools that belong to the Pike Trail League and the schools that belong to the Twin Lakes League is described as “very promising” by Pike Trail League President Roger Perkins – Superintendent of the Southern Cloud School District.

What’s more, the final product produced by this new marriage proposal could include the 4-schools from the Cheyenne Conference located in the Northwest part of the state.

Different this time around – the near certainty that the 8-team Twin Lakes League schools will have only 6-schools actively participating in school activities next year. Lucas-Luray will be absorbed into the Sylvan Unified District by land transfer from the Russell County School District and a student shortage at Tipton will force a complete coopting of activities with St. John’s of Beloit.

Perkins says the fact that the Pike Trail League and Cheyenne Conference are sharing some activities this school year, their league volleyball tournaments and their league track meets, is another factor fueling a renewed interest in a new league.

Perkins envisions a league up-and-running by the next school year and having as many as 14-member institutions. The new “super league” would be likely split into east and west divisions.

The only Twin Lakes League school that will go elsewhere is Chase because of the long travel distances to the schools that would be on the outer edges of a new league.

Perkins says a better overall picture should be available following a meeting of the interested schools in Beloit at the North Central Kansas Technical College February 3rd.
