Mitchell County Commission Meeting

At yesterday’s Mitchell County Commission meeting, Commission Chairman Mike Cooper got the opportunity to draw extensively on his background as a contractor during a conversation with Mitchell County Treasurer Evonne Melton.

Melton spoke to the Commissioners about the remodeling project her office will have to go through to accommodate a new computer network that will connect her office to the state network by July 1st.

Several building scenarios were discussed such as making a doorway into the room just to the north to free up space in the Treasurer’s Office. The north room would then house driver’s license testing and still be under the close supervision of he Treasurer’s Office.

It was eventually decided to schedule a walk through following next week’s meeting to get a better idea of the construction challenges associated with the project.

The Commissioners also discussed the possibility of doing some repair work to the county blacktop stretch that goes about 2-miles north of Hunter.

Public Works Superintendent Larry Emerson said the Road and Bridge Department would look at it if there was material available after the scheduled projects have been completed. Emerson said all of the county roads took a beating from the weather this winter.

The Commissioners also discussed the potential for funding problems associated with the new updated CAD 9-1-1 system that will be installed soon. The County was awarded $40,000 in grant money to make that happen.

Communications Director Becky Schaefer said the state has changed the specs on the project throwing it into limbo.

The new system will allow the Communications Department to respond to an emergency communication even if it is a text message or piece of video generated by a computer.
